In a culture different conceptional connecting factors and links are offered. Meanings are traded and negotiated.

I am curious about the idea of connectivity and relasticity within changing systems like culture, language etc. And how to make this interwoven web of relationships and interactive structures explicit?

An experiment in elasticity

The ongoing discourse on science, art and the role of the experiment prove my hypothesis that we are experiencing a diffusion of perceived orders and structures. Boundaries of meanings and definitions are blurred, elastic interpretations can be found. An agreed understanding can be observed in the acceptance of error and failure in an experiment. Errors are valued and contribute to knowledge production. However, it is a crucial question who is analysing the outcome of an experiment and who evaluates its meaning. If at all…
Latours quote points to the sociological aspects of experimentation. It is not about a possible setup, it is about the setup (the current situation) per se and about a collective construction of reality with no big plan or goal. Therefore the outcome of our experimental actions is not relevant, it is about the practical process itself. Latours investigation and description of knowledge production shows, that the system of practices crosses fields and diciplines. No longer we think of »subject« versus »object« or »social« versus »natural«. Through this openness new insights and structures become possible, new demarcations. I can find a relation between Latours concept and ‚mode 2’. An idea of knowledge production from Michael Gibbons et al. identifying an increasing interest in the application, socialisation and transdisciplinarity of knowledge. However, I just got this quote on facebook from an artist friend in NYC, he used to be an artist programmer and seems not to be an active artist anymore: „stopped for 8 years… digital interactive things become easy and not experimental anymore. People seem doing the same effects again and again. The new experimental stuff are this social network things…“ This quote supports the tendency of an increasing socialisation of the experimental, but it raises the question of what are nowadays experiments. In relation to my PhD-project on elasticity in communication I wonder how to set up an experiment which looks into current sociological areas of instability and flux and take into account that we are part of changing, flexible networks with an increasing dissolution of structures, meanings and definitions.
